Hi all -- I did a similar thing to Dick's version. However, in looking at all the photos and drawings I have of UTLX and NATX cars, the triple valve and air reservoirs are stacked on top of each other on the same side as the brake cylinder. I added poling pockets to a couple of my cars, but later determined the vast majority of tank cars didn't have them, probably because the end sills were not supported by a full car length structure, and maybe because of the possibilty of puncturing the tank. Additionally, most of the similar UTLX cars only had dome walkway and ladder on the brake cylinder side... I will have to redo my cars!
The SSA car is a dead ringer for the tank cars used by the US military, and there is a photo of an Army car (USAX) in the tank car photo album "Classic Freight Cars, the series" by H&M Productions (probably out of print). Have fun! Bill Winans Prescott Valley, AZ Dick has done an excellent of adding the very common end and stub side sills to the SSA tanks. I would probably use strip styrene instead of the Stewart end sill and add polling pockets using one of the methods discussed a week or so back on the list. In case anyone feels it is necessary to do these modifications to have a realistic car, below is a photo of a car set up basically like the SSA cars as designed. http://www.steamfreightcars.com/gallery/tank/tcx8246main.html As usual, the best way to decide what to do is look for prototype photos.
