Santa Fe's 90-Class FM passenger set could not MU with other makes because of
control incompatibility.

When I first hired out on Santa Fe in1964, Illinois Division freight
locomotives (ATC-equipped GP-20's, U25B's, and selected GP-30's) ran in "pure"
consists until about 1966, when SF began mixing them. They were somewhat
selective as to which locomotives they mixed at first, but after the demise of
ATC, anything went.

I never saw FM's of any type ever mixed with other makes, however, even though
the FM switch engines #'s 500-515 were equipped with ATC and MU controls.
