Bill, I'll have to check out CT this week. I can see three reasons the
UP ran such a train. First, it might have been the City of Everywhere.
I believe it was four different trains, LA, SF, Port, Denver combined
that broke up when it got into the West. Second, Amtrak did purchase a
lot of UP equipment (because their stuff was in pretty good condition
+it was used as part of the purchase into Amtrak) so it was being
distributed throughout the country. And third this was the equipment
that UP kept or not sold to Amtrak, so it was being sent to Omaha to be
used in business trains. I believe a fair amount of UP stuff made it
into Mexico.
To this day the UP has lots of passenger equipment that they drag out
for special events. When the UP absorbed the MP, I photographed a
business train in Houston Union Station that was probably 15-20 cars in
length. I can't see that being filled with executives, so it must have
been for show as much as anything.
