Normal passenger service was down. However, the day before Amtrak and
the first day of Amtrak saw an increase in ridership as many railfans
wanted to ride the last and the first. I was in Norfolk VA at the time
- courtesy of the US Navy - and rode the last N&W diesel-powered (GP9s)
Pocohantas from Norfolk to Suffolk and back. The next day I chased the
last N&W pre-Amtrak train... pulled by NKP 759 in N&W paint from
Petersburg to Norfolk. I think it was about 20 cars long. Dang, that
was 39 years ago - feeling old right now!!

Take care
Bill
