I'm glad to see renewed interest in these ALCO Models locomotives. They were an historic first for S scale. A couple of years ago, I put out a call for some extra gearboxes to have on hand to supply extra parts for my small fleet.
Among the ones I received was this one, showing someone's solution to the broken "ears" that the sideframes attach to. I am enclosing it in the Files section as soon as I finish this. I don't remember who sent me this, but if you're out there, identify yourself. Great Work! Another problem with these "ears" can be that the screw hole shoulder for the sideframe mounting screws can break away, too. My solution to this has been to re-tap the hole in the sideframes for a 2-56 machine screw, then use a flathead 2-56 screw to attach the sideframe. This is similar to the mounting system ALCO Models used on [my] later RS-2's, and is much sturdier than the RS-3 system. I have had to do some tinkering with these locomotives (they all suffered from gearbox freeze), but now, with their original Canon motors, they are good, smooth running machines. I love to run them in a "matched" (two RS-3's and an RS-2) consist at the head of a reefer train. As far as performance goes, they are right up there with my AM locomotives, topped only by my Locomotive Workshop/Cascade engines, by virtue of the equalized drives on the latter - and yes, all locomotives MU with each other quite well, with no "puppy pad" fine tuning required.
