Hi Jace, all;

Bill has an excellent point. Of course, this is a hobby, so we shouldn't make
it stressful or over-do "goals" as most of us have enough of that in our daily
life. On the other hand, it's really easy to get to a certain level and fall
into a comfortable "rut" we are reluctant to climb out from.

Most of us do want a bit of challenge in a hobby, but model railroading doesn't
have scores to beat or (for the most part) competitive elements. So it's easy
to decide we would rather not take some next step. This could be building a
layout or module, adding detail parts to a model, painting or weathering, kit
building or scratch building. Then again, you might never know how much MORE
fun the hobby could be if you don't give these steps a try (or more than one
try if the first doesn't work out).

Believe me, I know how hard it is to take a $40-$60 dollar model in beautiful
factory paint and take a knife or paint brush to it. What if I ruin it? I've
done this a lot of times, and I still feel the hesitation. Some projects have
not worked out as I hoped. The world didn't end. Other projects DID work and
I'm still in the hobby. Going beyond your current comfort level is an important
part of this (and many other) hobbies. Bill is suggesting the New Year as a
good time to resolve to try. Even a tiny "fork" or "Inglenook Sidings" micro
layout will give you a lot more fun than looking at stacks of boxes.
