More to it than lots of layers.  In my cabinet shop we prefer to use plywood on
a domestic core.  The imported Chinese birch plywood has lots of layers, but it
twists and bows all over the place.  Best place to shop for quality plywood is
some place that supplies the cabinet trade.

that thickness.

Bill....The SwitchMaster linkage can handle thicknesses of most any amount.
All that is needed is to use a brass tube cut to a longer length. You could
have five inches of thickness and it would not matter one whit. The piano wire
rotates within the brass tube and so the thickness is not a factor with this
linkage. No need for a slot at all. Just a small hole.

All you need is a 1/8" drill and some brass tube of the correct diameter. Have
you considered a jackhammer?

Yes. And I have used it all over the Mighty NYC mainline where the
riser/supports are about 18" apart so that my shoulders could fit in between.
For the yards, I used 1/2" plywood with joists spaced about 14" apart. Works
fine if you use good quality (lots of layers) plywood. Beware of cheap
plywood. There is a big difference between the good stuff and the horrible
stuff.
