I have found that using a wire stripper in the middle of a wire will peel
back the insulation about 1/4” – perfect for wrapping the drop lead from the
rail.

That's what I do. just pinch the insulated wire between a flat surface and a
utility knife held at an oblique angle, and pull on the wire. This skins off
one side of the insulation very quickly and makes it easy to pull off the
bare
