Believe it or not I actually did use a decoder (receiver) like this for a
brief period years ago with Dynatrol.  (An analog command control system
predating DCC.)  I did this because the layout was just being started and I
could move around with the Dynatrol throttles rather than being stuck in one
place with a DC power pack.  Luckily, I managed to switch to DCC early
enough that I could sell the Dynatrol stuff using the Internet, by putting
an ad on the usenet.  This was way before ebay, of course.

I once heard a question proposed about only using one decoder to run all 
his engines.  I don't recall an answer but it seems possible for those 
wanting to try or test engines before installing decoders.  What you do 
is hook up the decoder between the power booster and the track.  I 
really don't know if it works but it would seem feasible on a small layout.
