The AM plug-door boxcar is based on Santa Fe's SFRB 40-ft. plug-door boxcar fleet. For a number of years, at least, the prototype car for the model was sitting, sans trucks, here in Ft. Madison, IA. I haven't checked lately to see if it is still there.
When I first photographed it in 1983, it was just winding down a final career of hauling new refrigerators from a factory in Galesburg, IL, for Santa Fe. The paint scheme on AM's ATSF version of this car first appeared on Santa Fe rolling stock in 1961. The American Flyer Illinois Central refrigerator car can be made into a reasonable facsimile of the Santa Fe SFRD plug-door refrigerator car. I did one several years ago. A photo of it appears in the "Files" section under "Bob Nicholson" Bob Nicholson __________________________________________ --- In [email protected], Thomas Baker <bakert@...> wrote: > > The current crop--and most recent crop of refrigerator cars--does not include > anything like an SFRD prototype.
