Tom: The AM car is a replica of an SFR"B" car. These were insulated plug door boxcars, most of which were 50-ft. cars. They were not up set up for cooling, only insulated to keep product temperatures steady, much like a picnic cooler.
I considered myself fortunate to find this car, since the 40-ft. versions were
rare by 1983.
As for when plug doors showed up on the SFRD fleet, I don't know. However, I
have a Champ Decals lettering guide book copyrighted in 1965 which shows
drawings of SFRD cars with plug doors. Although I worked many trains of these
cars, I honestly don't remember what kind of doors they had.
