Dick / Terry Thanks for the info, I should have defined my situation in more detail. The 30 radius is in 2 legs of a turn-around why which is on my branchline, the largest loco will be a SHS 280 and there will typically only be (1) 72' combine in the branchline trains so I think I will be OK using this radius in this section of my layout.

The problem comes where the curve meets the straight. You will need transition curves (spiral easements) offset by about 3/4 inches, easily achieved by using a three-foot .172 rail as a spline against which to draw the easement centerline.
