 From a new comers point of view the Shinohara would be fine if they were 
widely available. The tomalcos are more a semi custom product with lots of 
choices that most people don't need with a correspondingly higher price than 
most people want to pay. 
 Something comparable to the new ON3 switches that Jace mentioned for $25 would 
be the sweet spot I imagine. HO scalers are used to paying about $15 for a 
switch so they could rationalize $25 since less would be needed for a given 
space. Atlas would be the obvious one to pull it off but they might not want to 
dilute the demand for their N, HO, and O lines of rolling stock, of course the 
solution to that would be for Atlas to start an S scale trainman line of low 
cost scale equipment :>) ....dave
