Wes,
I've used paper medical tape, like they use to hold gauze wrappings on, to
simulate a fairly rough canvas or canvas and tarred/car cemented roof. Thin
paper material but strong and very sticky so easy to apply. I apply the tape,
paint with engine black (a brush works just fine - give it a good heavy coat)
and then sand the whole thing with a 400 grit stick just to smooth it out some.
Apply a second coat of paint and your done. A nice weathered canvas texture.
The ultimate texture can be controlled by the sanding and total number of paint
coats you apply.
