You were not too late. I had put the project aside for the weekend when your 
message came through, so I had not attached the photo tape. This morning I 
tried your suggestion of the eyeglass papers and it gave me exactly the texture 
and look than I was searching for. This material is as thin as the tissue but 
much stronger, cuts neatly with a knife and can be painted on without glue.

Coming in late, but I didn't see this option. Try glass cleaning 
tissues. I've used these several times to make canvas roofs with good 
results. Sometimes "painting" them on or I use matte medium. I think 
Billy Wade gave me the idea some years ago.
