If they enjoy what they are doing it is their part of the hobby. Are they modelers, or collectors reliving their early days. This is the divide. There are also the brass collectors who do not build models.

Our club has 4 hi-rail guys who operate on our scale railroad. They don't look any different and when they go behind closed doors the flanges/couplers are their own business. There isn't any great need to separate the tall rail guys from the scale guys as our scale goes through some natural age changes.
