Hi Ed, My experience with O three railers is they value size and noise above
all so they'd rather run O on tight curves than S on tight curves. The
selection and price for O three rail is way better so it would take a lot of
change in the S toy gauge scene to make them change.
HO guys don't want to run toy type trains either, they are more likely than
the 3 railers to move into S for the better handling and viewing
characteristics but they are gonna demand scale fidelity equal to or greater
than what S scalers demand. SHS quality is the perfect benchmark to attract HO
guys, it's like the Kato or Atlas quality that they are used to. S scale is a
big improvement over HO when it comes to ease of use so S hyrail would not be
worth the sacrifice in appearance to HO guys.
HOer's pretty got out of the Hyrail scene in the 50's when the fleischman and
other imports didn't catch on and smaller flanged equipment became more and
more popular, and I doubt anyone would want to go back now as scale wheeled
equipment works just fine in HO or S scales.
Anyone building in S hyrail now days because they think it is more reliable
is just solving a problem that don't really exist.....dave
