Not that this discussion will make you a better modeller, but it might help 
attain a better view of where we (& they) are at.

I would observe that there are divisions within every group that may seem 
monolithic from the outside.  Up in Owosso (chez 1225) there was an O gauge 
3-rail set-up in operation at one of their to-dos, and it didn't take me 
long to realize that all the equipment running was Lionel or other brand 
quarter-inch (1/48) scale stuff (NO O27) on as broad of curves as one can 
get in a portable layout.  I complimented them on this.

These might be the equivalent of our high-rail - but not AF collector - 
modellers.

Of course I've seen - and been annoyed b the noise of - the O27 racetracks 
that Dave speaks of too.
