Someone needs to send Mr. Degnan the video of the Reg Bilidio (sp) 
layout in Canada.  I've mentioned his name before on this list.  From 
what I could see much of it would have equaled the most famous layouts 
of the time.  The scratch building and animation would have made up for 
any possible lack of detail.  Even the filming of his layout, for it's 
time, was well above average.  And lets face it John Allen's layout 
really didn't run that well and my understanding was that George's 
layout, had the same problems.

There was an older gentlemen locally who did a lot of animation for his 
HO layout--most of it very scale like and appropriate for his layout.  
The problem with many modular layouts with animation is that they go 
from a fire scene, to the flying helicopter and then to the ski lift 
within 20 ft in any scale.  I would guess it's sort of addictive for the 
guys building those scenes.  I'm glad they're having fun building them.
