Jim,

I had the same though in regard to center hole mounting. Perhaps the
screw was too tight and throwing the centering action off. The
coupler box does have a tube running through the middle which I
thought would support the tightened screw and prevent distortion of
the box but maybe it's not totally effective. I don't mind just using
the center hole to mount the couplers. One screw is more than strong
enough. We were using the Kadee #402 48 x 1/4" screws. If I have to
start to reposition the two side holes the time and aggravation factor
might start to outweigh the cost savings of the coupler.

How do you guys feel about the extra 1/16" the couple box sticks out
from the end of the car when using the pre-drilled Kadee mounting holes?

I should also note that all cars tested were SHS SS and DS boxcars.
Not sure if the position of the pre-drilled holes differs at all
manufacturer to manufacturer, etc. (I would assume it does.)

Chris:
Like Bob I have not noticed any centering issues. I do always mount
these couplers using the "wing" holes, not the center hole. Not sure,
but could that center mounting restrict movement a bit and cause the
issue?? That is just a guess from 500 miles away but it is the only
thing I understand as a difference in how you are using them. Maybe
Bob uses the center hole too, don't know...
