Whom was I talking to recently about drop-end gondolas? Doesn't really
matter, but below is an interesting picture of exactly what the purpose is
of such a car. They also frequently carry loads of steel construction
components, I-beams & the like.

There's nothing wrong with any of our S scale RTR gondolas, but one might
also consider the Lionel O-27 gondola with the approximately 49 S-scale foot
inside length. If you look at it and think about it, its prototype is a
drop-end gondola. That's the reason it has the brake wheel(s) on the side
rather than the end. (Having two brake wheels on such a short car is
strictly a Lionelism.)

The Lionel car can be used as-is, though it's a bit too wide for S and would
better be narrowed down. The hardest part of narrowing down an O-27 car is
the seam at the ends. If one were to do one of these, that problem would be
obviated - You just remove the ends and put them in your scrap pile. The
seam in the floor is hidden by the load. Click below.
