I've been putting the P-B-L rubber air hoses on any new cars I built for about the last 2-3 years. I normally leave the hose part unpainted, but I've painted the valve end and connection with both Polly S and Floquil and the paint has held up so far. Of course I still have some cars waiting for their turn in the paint shop.
P-B-L also makes them in HO in their Hi-Tech Details lines. There they state that they're paintable with plastic-compatible paint. http://www.hitechdetails.com/ I've been tempted to try gluing a small piece of refrigerator magnet on the end to see if I could get them to couple. They should look good with Sergent couplers. (Lately, I've been installing some HO Sergent couplers on my narrow gauge rolling stock.)
