I've been putting the P-B-L rubber air hoses on any new cars I built for
about the last 2-3 years. I normally leave the hose part unpainted, but
I've painted the valve end and connection with both Polly S and Floquil and
the paint has held up so far. Of course I still have some cars waiting for
their turn in the paint shop.

P-B-L also makes them in HO in their Hi-Tech Details lines. There they
state that they're paintable with plastic-compatible paint.

I've been tempted to try gluing a small piece of refrigerator magnet on the
end to see if I could get them to couple. They should look good with
Sergent couplers. (Lately, I've been installing some HO Sergent couplers on
my narrow gauge rolling stock.)

Bob, you took pictures of a Sn3 caboose I built that had both the rubber air
hoses and the Sergent couplers.
