I, for one, have never bought a model just to improve my layout... it was 
always for the purpose of increasing my freight car or locomotive fleet.

However... if all you want is something to improve your layout (something more 
to stick on it), then might I suggest taking a pen (or pencil) and some 
scissors to a sheet of cardboard?  The results could easily be as impressive as 
AF type pizza cutter wheels and AF type couplers.

    They save time if one designs a layout that can use them as is. If it's 
about the layout and not a specific car one just builds to use whatever is made 
that suits the scheme.
