Jace,
Russ used just about every type of S car available for repainting at 1 time or another. He started with the clunker "under the table" American Flyer. He also used the new old stock shells from Hobby Surplus Sales. The AF shells started to become price prohibitive. I do not remember him using American Models boxcars but he did repaint quite a few hoppers. He even released a cast centersill from pewter. Russ switched to Pacific Rail Shops cars for quite a while. Ironically the 50' cars were not overly welcomed by some AF operators because "the roofs were too high and they were too long!" I am not kidding here. Russ was ramping down when SHS was expanding. He did not get any SHS to repaint to the best of my knowledge. Finally he had his own creations of barrel cars and tank cars. Thanks for asking such questions. I do like to remind us of Russ - even though his main market was not overly scale oriented. I did not get many cars from him when I could have. I have some regrets about that now. I did notice the eBay listings you mentioned. The cars are reasonably priced. But how can you sell 5 cars in 1 lot and show a photo of one without a good description? I didn't get that part.
