There is one curiosity that I've found about the line of PRS cars when
they evolved. I think PRS cars still outnumber all the other brands on
my layout, plus I had to build all the cars that were featured in the
PRS ads; so I have built many. I got to the point where I could build
either version of the 50' car in a couple hours even with a couple of
modifications that I made. The grain car, due to it's delicate ladders
added about an hour. When the various 40' boxcars arrived it was up to
two evenings of fun. The reefer was entirely another matter, as each
car got better detail-wise the time necessary to complete the car
increased to where it was about 5, 2-3 hour sessions for me. I know of
one individual who replaces all the plastic piping with brass wire, so I
can't imagine how much time that adds!
I guess the solution if you want a whole fleet of reefers built, might
be to find a little Chinese wife who has worked in those factories and
bring her back here! I think it's great when wives are involved in the
hobby!
