First off, the other things. I've charged myself with doing some
research with long past magazines. Here's one for String Bob. I found
an article on making a resistance soldering unit in the October 95 issue
of Mainline Modeler. I think most of those magazines are readily
available on the used market.
Next I came across an article by our own Ken Zieska in the June 99'
issue of Railmodel Journal (one of those magazines that past into
history rather quietly). Ken's layout is nicely featured in a couple of
full page shots of NP power pulling freights along the Rumsoda River. I
think both AM and SHS missed the boat by not painting their respective
diesels in those NP colors (I would have had to add another RR to
model). Anyway the magazine might be worth trying to find as it also
has an article on Milwaukee Ribsided boxcars that we've been talking
about on this list.
And if we go back further, to December 81 to the Christmas issue of
RMC. First off the back cover features "The affordable Sn3 K-27" from
PFM. Wow that's a little chunk of history in itself. But the crowning
part is in the inside where Associate Editor, the late Jim Boyd talks
about the NASG convention that was held in Syrause. Unfortunately most
of the modelers featured in the one page article are people who are no
longer with us in one form or another, except for Stan Stokrocki.
Later, I found an article, again in RMC, written by Ed Loizeaux talking
about the Denver NASG convention. One of the feature shots, by yours
truly, is of a very well done ten-wheeler made by that grumpy, cave
dwelling, left coast guy--Rusty R. Unfortunately again another modeler,
Mike Elkins made some beautiful diesels and then left this world. Also
shown were our own Houston S Gaugers modules. They are still with us
and will be operating for an upcoming Father's Day mall show.
I've got another bookcase full of magazines, but with our temperatures
in the upper 90's and no rain, it might be time well spent.
