Group,

There has been discussion of late over on the Early Rail group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EarlyRail/ about modeling a Dominion Atlantic
Railroad boxcar, including trucks. A photo of the prototype can be found here:

Through the efforts of Rene Gourley these trucks are now available in S scale
from Shapeways:

These are the same truck but made in HO by Rene:

Some notes on this item:

This is (hopefully) scaled to use NWSL 1.27" pointed axles. These are
available in either Proto:64 or Scale.

The material "White Strong & Flexible" is NOT an engineering plastic, so it's
strength for this use is a bit in question. It SHOULD be strong enough if not
abused. Wear is another possible issue. If this material does wear
excessively, it would be possible to drill out the journals on the back and
insert axle bushings available from different sources.

The cost (presently) of $8 a pair is only for the truck casting, not wheelsets.
Shipping is included. These are shipped from Europe (I haven't been able to
locate even the country of origin, but maybe Netherlands...) so there may be a
small duty fee to pay UPS.

The prototype trucks were built by Rhodes, Curry & CO. Ltd. of Amherst, N.S.,
dating from perhaps 1893. RC&Co built cars for most of the Canadian railroads,
so these trucks might show up on any Canadian road of the era. Specific cars
are not covered here, you're on your own.

While these are drawn to represent these specific trucks, it would be possible
for them to stand in for other makes of double arch-bar trucks. As you all
know we S scalers have a dearth of available trucks, so any addition should be
welcome.

I have as of today ordered four pair of these trucks from Shapeways. I will be
very interested to see the strength, and the level of detail on these items.
In about two weeks I hope to give a more detailed report on my results.

Darrell Smith
