I was pleased with the great things the crew on the May Scotty Mason Show had
to say about S Scale. Right away they highlighted the fact that there was full
on scale modeling in S and not just American Flyer. They then proceeded to
praise the size and easy on the eyes detail of our models. Great promotion of
the scale. The whole discussion was prompted by the RMC special section. I
know I was a naysayer when it comes to that topic but it seemed to have worked
for some who are outside the S community. If nothing else it reminded them we
are still on the map.
The discussion with Mike Cougill of O Scale Trains on The Model Railway Show
took an interesting turn when they discussed his idea of Model Railroading vs
Railroad Modeling. He's a railroad modeler as, it seems, am I. Is this the
new PC term for rivet counter? I don't think so. Beyond rivet counting I
think some of us are primarily concerned about super detailed models in a super
detailed scene. To me, a layout should be a series of connected dioramas.
Judging from his work and his Yahoo Group, Jim Six would probably be another
good candidate for railroad modeler. The concept got me thinking. I like it.
Now if we could just merge the two and convince folks there is no better scale
to railroad model in then 1:64 we'd be good. As someone who will essentially
have to scratch build their entire fleet, I can't imagine having to do that at
1:87.
