Bill - While I think the sound decoders are great, although sometimes overrated; I am less sold on the need for larger amperage decoders. For S scale, I think it is just a way of paying more money for something you don't really need. So far all the DCC and sound decoder installations I've done have been with the standard decoders and I have had no issues; including installs on Allegheny's, 2-6-6-2's, double headed 2-10-4's and turbines pulling long trains. The only exception was Jettie's Niagara which has some crazy 6 amp sewing machine motor - and still, I might add, is routinely out pulled by my NYC and SP Mike's...!
Personally, I wish the manufacturers would focus less on added electronic gizmo sounds & features and more on easier installation. I'll bet a lot of other guys are like me, they will try the "new improved" decoders on locomotives not yet equipped with any DCC, but as far as going back and replacing existing sound or decoder installations... no way!!
