My HO buddies are using Surface Mount 603 LEDs for their headlight
installations. I have been using the larger 3 mm size, but am considering
using the smaller size. If you go with the SM603, I would recommend you
purchase LEDs with wires installed unless you really love soldering very small
wire (magnet wire) to very small tabs. (VGB)
I prefer the golden white variety as opposed to the cool white which looks to
blue and modern for me (I am a 1950's modeler).
As you probably know, you will need a resistor to protect each LED from the
current in the TSU decoder. I start with 1K ohn 1/2 which generally works.

I believe the "standard socket" you are referring too is the connector harness.
These come in a variety of sizes - e.g., 6, 8 & 9 pin. You can locate these
at Litchfield Station (http://www.litchfieldstation.com/xcart/home.php?cat=255)
and other DCC dealers.
Of course you will need to make the hardwire connections to the leads on the
pins.
My preference is to make my own pins in most cases using micro machine pins I
have purchased at a surplus electronics store.
