Thorin....
John's advice is very good, but......
if you intend to run your locos on several different layouts, each with
differing track voltages, it might be worthwhile to add a small regulator
between the decoder and the bulbs or LEDs. Then the track voltage will not
matter since the regulator will hold the voltage at a set level.
