New cars from the mfg'er: Immediately.
As the older cars came in for a shopping, as a general rule the running
boards came off, and the side ladders lowered (but not always).
Yard scene photos from your time frame will help a lot in trying to
determine a general ratio for the era you're wanting to depict.
