Dome car modelers & fans...
Since we always seem to lapse back into a discussion about the prototypical l
"correctness" of the American Models dome car on this list, I thought I'd
provide the below websites and a quick comment or two of what I have researched
on these cars over the years.
As we have previously stated, the AM dome cars were "modeled" after the NP and
GN BUDD domes (virtually identical cars on the exterior). Those two BUDD car
designs were unique to themselves and the Empire Builder and North Coast
Limited trains. Only Ron knows why he chose to model the Empire Builder train
set.
Ignoring all of the previously discussed errors/compromises in the AM cars, the
domes themselves are too small in two important ways; 1. They are 6"
(approximately) too short in height (tall), and 2. They are not wide enough.
BUDD domes were all 28" high and either 15'-6" or 16'-2" long. Yep, there were
two different sizes of BUDD domes. All, however, were full-width, meaning the
domes extended right out to the flat edge of the car side. THAT is the most
glaring error with the dome, not the missed height.
I highly recommend that anyone interested in dome cars visit these two websites.
www.vistadome.com/vistadome
has a vast photo array of nearly any dome car you might wish to see.
www.trainweb.com/web_lurker
offers a fine discussion of each RR/train that had domes in the US/Canada.
John Kuehl has done a really good job of both illustrating and describing the
differences between BUDD, P/S & home-built domes. Again, there is a wealth of
data, car names and photos of standard domes, 3/4 domes and full length domes.
There are even interior photos showing the differences between BUDD and P/S
cars.
