That's exactly why Lionel's S offerings are so offensive to me. They have the
skill/potential to produce more accurate models in line with HO, N and Z but
instead they stick us with a Frankenstein Big Boy and toyed out Challenger. I
for one am hoping the days of center post mounted pilot and trailing trucks,
with giant springs, and enough daylight showing between them and the body to
allow the trucks to spin like a top are coming to an end.

Lionel can stay in the O market. Both my local dealers have commented to me
that they get back most of the Lionel locomotives and operating accessories
they sell for warranty repairs. There is no profit in selling Lionel when they
have to ship everything back to the manufacturer for repair. One has all but
stopped stocking Lionel the other still carries it in the hopes the Lionel
customers will pick up something else while they are in the shop. We don't
need that headache in S.

As Jace said Lionel has made some very nice scale equipment lately. I put a
photo in my "dave's stuff" photo album of one of their PS2 covered hoppers if
anyone wants to see what Lionel can do with the proper attitude. They just need
to get inspired to try a few in S scale. with the down economy and the bubble
in O scale stuff it seems like Lionel would enjoy developing a less saturated
market? ...DaveBranum
