Hi Bill, good questions.
As I plan my new layout I need to think about operating software so I hope
you gets some good answers. In the past I've used switch list that I hand write
to reflect the needs of the industries on the layout, it works pretty good but
could probably use the help of software to make it more like the new real
railroad methods.
For inventory I have a bound "composition" book that I break into pages for
each scale with sub-pages for each type of car. Every arriving car gets entered
into the appropriate place with reporting marks and car number, description,
and product number if I got the box with it. When sold I cross the entry out
leaving the info re-able in case I want to review what I once had.
