Michael,

I have been reading all these e-mails about people having indeed tons of
engines, so I figured I'd chime in to "make you feel better". I have
three engines (one is an A-B-A set), all S standard gauge. There are
apparently enough people to offset our rather meager motive power. I
sold all of my maybe 20 or so N-scale engines to afford the upgrade to
S. When I sold them, I made a commitment to myself to not buy any more
than I can actually use on the layout I have. Most of my N-scale engines
sat in the cabinets for years and very few saw any running time. I had
three favorites that I kept on the layout. Only once was I able to put
all of them on a layout in a large yard, only to tear the layout down
about two weeks after I had accomplished that.

I recently ran into a friend whom I hadn't seen in a year or more. I
helped him demolish his N-scale layout and did most of the benchwork and
wiring for his new HO-scale layout about 7 years ago. He's heavy into
operations, but could only convince his wife to allow him to have a
2-foot deep shelf layout around the perimeter of two adjacent 10x10
bedrooms (no basements here in Houston, TX). Bottom line was he was only
going to have enough space for about three operators, both on his layout
and in his physical space. The layout was built in record time and we
started operating right away. He quickly bought about 5 or engines which
was more than enough for three of us operating (he acted as the mobile
dispatcher). However, he seemed to never be able to pass up another
engine. When I ran into him the other day I asked him if he had bought
any more engines. He said "Yes, I now have 36". I was shocked, but now I
know he is "just average"...
