Hi Bob, When I was a kid I hung out at the SP yard in the summers and made
friends with the section gang who sometimes let me ride along with them on the
speeder to their work sites. Their speeder had a flathead engine similar to an
old willys jeep and could spin the wheels if the driver popped the clutch. It
had no trouble pulling the trailers of supplies and the crew up the
approximately 2.5 % grade to Felton. It was always a great ride up the river
canyon, I'd watch them work and learn how to lay track, they were an old crew
nearing retirement so had plenty of time to let me try to drive spikes or cut
rail or whatever they were doing that day. We'd clear out for the sand train to
pass thru the work site then they'd share homemade tamales or whatever the
senoras had packed them for lunch then have a siesta , maybe a card game then a
little afternoon work till time to go back to the yard.. . ...DaveBranum
