Hi Ed, I think it's the distinct view that S provides. The size gives a view
that shows off the details very well but still allows us to see 3 or 4 cars
without scanning our eyes. I tend to feel most comfortable with the S view and
find myself backing up if looking at O stuff or moving in closer if looking at
HO stuff. For some reason TT scale provides the other perfect view of a farther
away wide scene. Now if one is more interested in fine car building O might be
more satisfying or if lots of operation is desired HO or even N could fit
better but S seems to be the sweet spot between detail, prototype depth of
scenery that fits on typical layout benchwork width,and operating mass. I think
it would be very interesting to place all the scales on a level playing field
and see which would win more modelers over if the supply and demand of all
scales were the same? ...DaveBranum
