Hi John: Use a "pic" to handle the springs. That is, a thin blade of some type. (I use a jeweler's screwdriver, but a blade w/less angle would be better.) Using your "pic", you insert the blade inbetween the tightly wound portion of spring on one end (or the other), then simply wedge the spring into to place in the slot, hold your finger on the spring... and remove the pic. With a bit of practice, it isn't nearly as bad.
However, best deal: Purchase assembled couplers from SHS!
