Hi John:

Use a "pic" to handle the springs. That is, a thin blade of some type. (I use
a jeweler's screwdriver, but a blade w/less angle would be better.) Using your
"pic", you insert the blade inbetween the tightly wound portion of spring on
one end (or the other), then simply wedge the spring into to place in the slot,
hold your finger on the spring... and remove the pic. With a bit of practice,
it isn't nearly as bad.

However, best deal: Purchase assembled couplers from SHS!

  Subject: {S-Scale List} Kadee 802/808's...outa here!

Yesterday, while watching the Bears lose, the Packers lose (unbelievably!)
and then Tebow having no miracles...
brought 6 freight cars of all stripes upstairs to put in KD 808 couplers.
Never again. Those damn springs are the biggest pain in the a**.
I'll use Kadee no 5 or whatever Don Thompson has left of his wonderful
ASSEMBLED (why can't KD do that?) couplers.
Some things in S that frustrate me...coupler issue, SHinohara switches, and
now the 45 degree crossing I paid $50 for has to be cut apart in order to
operate correctly. I'm really begining to wonder if I made a mistake switching
scales? And, the lack of any kind of ready built building...look at Woodland
Scenics, now doing finished stuff in O...
Butch, I have some 808s I'll send to you if you give me your address.
  Thanks for letting me vent...
