Don't get discouraged, John; I've been assembling small springs as long as I've been in model railroading, starting with MDC/Roundhouse HO truck kitsa good fifty-seven years ago, and I STILL--unlike Paul--lose the occasional spring. That is why Kadee includes a few extras in the package. There are various tricks, such as the assembly jigs others have mentioned, or the thread trick, or doing the assembly in an enclosed area, but I generallyjust sit down at the workbench and go to it. It is vexing when a spring pops out of the draftgear and goes sailing into a black hole (shag carpet in thework area doesn't help) but if I can't find it in a few minutes I use a spare. There are enough in the package that over time I accumulate quite a fewextras (I don't lose springs rather more often than I do). And I sometimes find those missing springs when I am scrabbling around, looking for somethingelse that went flying away (and for which I do NOT have a duplicate). And I use just the point of something like the Xacto #11 blade stuck in the end of the spring. If you haven't been doing a lot of such things over the years, the deft touch necessary does come with experience.
