You could use very fine beach sand or foundry sand and paint it.  I once 
brought a sample of good Maine dirt to the hardware store to have them match 
the color.  I wanted to put a thick layer of paint down and sprinkle the ground 
cover over it while it was still wet.  I thought the dirt color would look very 
natural on the bare spots, and by golly it did.  You should have seen the face 
on the paint guy.  I think I made his day.
