Rich.....
You are not alone in your feelings. One of the leading manufacturers of S
stuff once said to me (years ago) words to this effect: "If you are trying to
attract more folks to S, while do you charge them extra to attend an S
convention?" He has a point there and was simply trying to make S more
attractive to others. He was careful not to criticize the NASG in the process
because he is in the business of selling S products and wants to keep everyone
happy.
On the other hand, most organizations are always looking for so-called "member
benefits" to justify their dues. Things like magazines, special cars,
conventions, web sites closed to outsiders, event insurance, library services,
etc. are the typical things offered as membership benefits. Both the NMRA and
NASG do things like this so that folks will want to join up and belong.
Many folks do join these organizations for the purpose of attending conventions
and, for them, it is a good deal. For others, they would just as soon not be
bothered. Each to their own, I suppose.
Either way, there is room for everyone in one way or another. I suppose in
this age of the internet, we are all expecting things to be free -- like
reading all the newspapers and magazines that used to be subscription only.
The world is changing.....
Cheers....Ed L.
