I don't think guard rails would be any better than tapered rails in that
situation and would be more work.
I had a bowser O scale turntable that was powered by a gear head motor
controlled by an HO power pack. It was very easy to align by eye with the power
pack throttle. I don't know if S would be as easy as O but I think it would be
do-able if the turntable is close to the aisle so one can see the rails to
align them. If I had to do it with an indexing pin I think I'd use some kind of
knife switch type blade on the end of the turntable so there would be no pins
to try to line up.
For close up photography my little canon elph has a macro setting that can get
as close as I've ever wanted to shoot...DaveBranum
