Frequently you can go to a good hardware store and buy a socket head cap 
(allen) screw with a socket size that will correspond to the nut you need a 
wrench for. For metric sizes use metric screws. Once you have the right size 
allen bolt you can then chuck it into a pin-vise or file handle, or make your 
own handle by drilling a dowel and threading/epoxying the threaded end of the 
screw into the dowel. I didn't think of this trick myself, some of the siderod 
wrenches included with Rivarossi HO scale steam locos were made this way.
