I think your survey of S scale on eBay is a little misleading.  I have  
been selling (not on Ebay) a lot of stuff lately and looking at eBay to  
determine asking prices.  I see prices all over the board.  Many are  
ridiculously 
high and are not getting any bids.  There are some collectors  who are 
pricing things double or triple what they are likely to get, though I  admit 
these are mainly AF items, not scale stuff.  But on the other  end there are 
some pretty reasonable things.  I did buy 3 PRS 40 foot  undecorated kits for 
an average of $20 last week.

Point was that guys looking to move up from HO  find it easier and cheaper 
to go with O . If they were moving down then Z  would be in the position of 
S cause they'd be more likely to go with N scale  for the same supply/demand 
and price situation.
and yeah we need more stuff  but in all price ranges including cheap cause 
some folks are on a budget.  ...DaveBranum
