When trying to drill correctly spaced holes for ladders, wrungs, steps and the sort, I use a drafting DIVIDER with the screwed adjuster similar to the one seen at the link below :
http://www.alvinco.com/Shop/Products.aspx?IID=20629&ST=divider By lining up the tips of the divider with the mounting stubs on the ladder, wrung , etc, it is almost impossible to get the holes spaced wrong. Once I have the divider spaced correctly and positioned on the model where I want it, I press the tips into the plastic of the model to create a starting dimple which prevents the drill from 'traveling' when I start to drill. Works every time for me. A trick I have used is put a spot of paint on the ends of the sprue and then set it on the car or a template. a bit easier that trying to drill by eyeball.
