John, Amtrak is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and there were
major roads still running it up until then. Vastly scaled down service by
the time Amtrak took over of course, but service nonetheless.
Not an expert on the timeline here, but I think there were some S scale
models in the 1930¹s and of course Gilbert produced it up until 1966 I
believe.

Wasn't passenger service essentialy abandoned by the time S came along.
Remember we always wait for years after a new product is announced , to get
it??? I think, or wonder, or forget (what's that?)
