I have used steel (piano) wire, also. A bit hard to work with sometimes, but it 
will take the abuse. Also, to make a smooth bend on something like curved 
caboose grab irons, etc., I use a brass tube, grasp the wire at about the 
center with a pair of needle nose pliers, and bend on each side of the pliers. 
Finishing the bend is easy once that is done
