A Yahoo! list gives its owner the option of being full-featured, which (among 
other things) lets people post any font, any size, any color, with all the 
cutesy emoticons J that teenagers are so fond of.


TTML has never been full-featured. Internet committee has discussed this a few 
times and has decided to keep it plain-text only. I’m convinced that we get 
better protection against worms and viruses that way.


Alan is certainly correct that different computers with different operating 
systems and in different parts of the world have different character sets that 
aren’t always interpreted as intended by all recipients of the messages.


Hey, the “A-OK” hand gesture that’s viewed as a compliment by Americans is seen 
as an obscenity by Brits. You get the idea.
