I am not a "sound junkie" either, mainly due to the time and cost factor involved. In contrast, I like my locos to run as quiet as I can and have directed my efforts in that direction.
As a result, my Alco Models RS units run quiet, the "growl" is gone, except RS-2 #34, which is scheduled for shop time for modifications. One of my biggest pleasures is hearing RS-1 #33 "clunk" down the yard lead at Mooar as it passes over some of my prototypical (for the circumstances) less-than-perfect trackwork. Also, prototypically, I know where trains are out on the main line just from the running sounds they make. This guides my operation decision making at the terminals at both ends of the line, since I have been installing some view blocks at certain operating points to instill a sense of distance and apprehension as trains approach. They tend to burst into a scene rather suddenly and personnel (me) at various points have to be ready for their arrival. They also tend to disappear rather suddenly, as well when they leave a location. Along with Peter and others, I guess I overbuilt, in that I still have a lot of main line that is not detailed, and the dispatcher's panel is not installed at Mt. Zion. Currently, main line circuits are "gang wired" and operations are under the supervision of the operator at MJ Tower. For my FNF this week, I installed headlights and lighted number boards in the empty "eye sockets" of the remaining American Models F-units. They look nice, except that I need to pop the number boards and trim them for a better fit. I also need constant lighting in the locomotives to show off my efforts better, but I'm not sure when that will happen, either. boB Nicholson ______________________________________________ --- In [email protected], "Bill Lane" <bill@...> wrote: > > Peter, > > > > I too am not a sound unit junkie.
